The Top End in the dry

Why we send you to Kakadu in July, not January.

The Katherine River runs between tall orange sandstone cliffs in Nitmiluk Gorge, its water rippling in soft light

Kakadu in January is green, loud with rain, and half the roads are shut. The waterfalls are spectacular from the air and mostly out of reach on the ground. It's a real season, and some people love it. It's not where we'd start.

In the dry season, from about May to September, the floodplains draw back into billabongs. The birds crowd in. The roads to the escarpment open, and the rock art galleries at Ubirr and Burrungkuy are lit low and golden in the evening.

Early in the dry, the falls are still running. By September the heat is building and the humidity is rising; locals call it the build-up. We aim for June and July.
