Karri forest, cold surf and the winemaker who opens the barrel hall.
When to goMargaret River
Margaret River sits between two capes on a limestone ridge, with karri forest behind and the Indian Ocean in front. It is a place for slow days: a surf at Yallingup, the cellar doors in the afternoon, dinner at a winery that grows its own vegetables. Fly to Perth and drive down, or end a west coast journey here.
About three hours by road from Perth. Busselton (BQB) has some direct flights from the east coast.
Month by month
Warm and dry, beaches and cellar doors open late. Vintage from February to April.
Mild and quiet. Whales pass the cape from about June to December.
Cool and wet. Fires lit, caves and wineries open, the surf at its biggest.

What we'd do
Caves, didgeridoo and bush food with a Wadandi guide.
A tasting with the winemaker, arranged by us.
One or three days of coastal walking, bags moved for you.
Sixty-metre trees, driven slowly or walked.
Limestone formations, a short drive from Yallingup.
Humpbacks and southern rights from the cliffs or a boat, in season.

Questions
Sometimes: Busselton has seasonal direct flights. Otherwise it's a pleasant three-hour drive.
We'd book a driver for the tasting days.
Not really. Bracing in summer, cold in winter. The bays on the Geographe side are calmer.
